Join us for an unforgettable evening of dance and music with Victor Furtado (banjo), Earl White (fiddle), Jake Eddy (guitar) and Carter Eddy (bass) with Janine Smith (calling) on Sun, Oct 1, 2023 in the historic Arden Gild Hall: 2126 The Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19810.
The dance starts at 2PM with a half hour lesson if you are new or need a refresher about contra and square dancing. The dance will be from 2:30-5:30. The band has a large repertoire of exciting and interesting tunes. And Janine is well known for bringing fun and excitement to all the dance events she leads.
There will be a break between the dance and concert so bring your instrument if you would like to get together and play some tunes. The concert will start at 7:30.Victor is a master clawhammer banjoist playing everything from fiddle tunes to basa nova, incorporating new techniques he developed (https://victorfurtado.net/ ). He won the Steve Martin Banjo Prize (https://freshgrassfoundation.org/steve-martin-banjo-prize/). Check him out playing with Billy Strings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJxVgl5bLpE. Hopefully Victor and the Band won't play this fast for the dance!
Check out Jake Eddy, a rising star in flatpick guitar! He is gaining a strong following on instagram (https://www.instagram.com/thejakeeddy/) and already has a bunch of recordings including this album with Andy Statman: (https://andystatmanjakeeddycartereddynedluberecki.bandcam...).
Jake tells his exciting story in this interview: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioXBonG2a_I
Earl White is a legend in Old Time music. Here is brief bio " Earl White has been a mainstay in the old-time, folk and dance community for more 45 years. An original and founding member of the famed Green Grass Cloggers, he is one of few Black Americans preserving and playing Appalachian old time string band music, which was an intricate part of Black communities and formed the foundation of American music of today. Earl White is well known for his extensive repertoire of tunes, and his heartfelt, syncopated, driving style." “The Janine Smith experience is what you get when you cross a howdy-ma’am-BBQ-and-beans Honky Tonk with Zoom contra and sprinkle on some twinkly lights for sass. She’ll bring you a night of fun dances, from contras to squares , heck maybe a Singing Square, whether you’re sitting, standing, or somewhere in between. Her teaching is clear and to-the-point, though she has been known to goof around a bit. She’s one of the “Hot Square Babes”, a quintet of female callers who threw a monthly Square Dance Party in the DC area from 2004-2018, and a founding member of the DC Square Dance Collective.” https://camp.cdss.org/project/janine-smith/
